Train To Busan doesn’t bring anything exceptionally original to the walking undead, but it’s no less of a thrilling ride. An overworked dad is riding the rails with his neglected daughter when a Z- word outbreak strikes, causing savagery from corpse and living alike. Its fast- moving, contorted foes are genuinely freaky in the movie’s cramped setting, making the story feel like a zombified Snowpiercer. It’s a fun action flick with a slightly heavy- handed but solid emotional core that’s unsurprisingly getting an English remake.

Big releases like Insidious, Sinister and The Purge open on thousands of screens and are supported by huge advertising and marketing budgets. But other more modest releases disappear after an average opening weekend. Or worse still fail to make it into theatres in the first place.

So the following are a few films that you might have missed first time around; 1. The House of the Devil (2.

Ti West has fast become one of the most important genre directors working today, with The Innkeepers and The Sacrament two of the best horror films released in the last few years. But for this list we’re plumping for his 2.

House of the Devil, simply because it’s downright  terrifying. Jocelin Donahue plays a student who is so desperate for money that she accepts a babysitting job even though it means travelling to a creepy mansion in the middle of the woods, and in spite of the fact that there doesn’t actually seem to be a baby. Horror ensues, with the title a dead giveaway to the devilish nature of the scares. The Awakening (2.

The Awakening sends a shiver up the spine for its duration. Set in England in 1. The Great War, it’s a tale of spirits from the past haunting those in the present. Rebecca Hall plays a ghostbuster who debunks the spiritual charlatans of the time, but an investigation of a school haunting causes her to question everything she believes. Shocks and scares follow, but with an emotional depth missing from most modern horror films.

Frozen (2. 01. 0)Ever been skiing and felt a flash of fear when your chair- lift momentarily stops? Well spread that sensation over the best part of an hour, throw in some bloodthirsty wolves, and the result is Frozen, a hugely entertaining horror from writer- director Adam Green.

Shawn Ashmore, Emma Bell and Kevin Zegers play three youngsters who become trapped on a ski- lift half- way down a mountain just as night falls, with anxiety slowly turning to fear and then panic, with MUCH worse to follow. Green maintains the tension throughout, with Frozen a master- class in minimalist horror. The Children (2. 00. A festive gathering turns terminal in The Children - a hugely entertaining entry into the ‘killer kid’ horror genre. It’s the dead of winter and two families meet up at a secluded cottage in the English countryside. They barely bat an eyelid when the kids start falling ill with what seems like flu, but soon the accidents start.

Then the deaths. And slowly but surely it becomes clear that the children are inexplicably bumping off their parents. Preying on the most primal of fears, director Tom Shankland injects a healthy dose of dark humour into proceedings so that watching The Children is an unadulterated blast. American Mary (2.

American Mary is an incredibly dark film about a seriously dark subject. Ginger Snaps star Katherine Isabelle plays the title character, a medical student who is struggling to pay her bills when proceedings commence. Hope comes in the shape of well- paid work carrying out illegal operations for shady characters, with Mary getting drawn into a terrifying and dangerous underground world. Written and directed by twin sisters Jen and Sylvia Soska, the set- up is great, and while the pay- off doesn’t quite deliver, its nevertheless a startling and thought- provoking piece of cinema. Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2. Set in a world where the villains in slasher movies are real, Behind the Mask is a mockumentary that follows the efforts of a wannabe serial killer to take his place alongside the likes of Jason Voorhees and Michael Myers.

But what starts out as a light- hearted satire filled with clever jokes at the expense of genre conventions soon morphs into a harrowing tale of terror, as the initially likeable ‘Leslie Vernon’ turns into the camera crew’s worst nightmare, and the comedy transforms into horror. Nathan Baesel delivers a wickedly perverse performance as the title character, while the esteemed likes of Robert Englund and Zelda Rubenstein give chilling support.

Black Death (2. 01. British director Chris Smith has made some great genre films over the last decade, from hilarious horror- comedy Severance to mind- bending chiller Triangle. But Black Death is probably his most accomplished work to date – set during the bubonic plague, it’s a grim tale about a monk teaming up with a violent band of mercenaries to investigate whether stories of corpses coming back to life are true. The brilliant cast includes Sean Bean, Johnny Harris, Andy Nyman, Eddie Redmayne, David Warner and Carice van Houten, while the story is chock- full of surprises, and the kills imaginative and suitably unpleasant.
