Nearly 3 hours long and his first film not shot on celluloid lensed on standard definition digital video instead, David Lynchs Inland Empire might not be, to some, the masterpiece that is Mulholland Drive, it is nevertheless still quintessentially weird, disturbing and genuinely unnerving perhaps the closest Lynch has come to psychological horror since Eraserhead. Within the bewildering picture, a film crew is making a movie that they realize after the fact is a type of remake a movie abandoned during production because the lead actress was murdered midway through filming the rumor is that the movie is cursed. Laura Dern plays the lead actress in this unnamed film alongside Justin Theroux, a lothario actor known for bedding his co stars, who has to deal with her extremely jealous and distrustful Eastern European husband. As the script shes shooting becomes blurred with her reality, Derns characters becomes increasingly sucked into the pictures surreal, feverish and authentically nightmarish tone. Featuring Lynch regulars like Grace Zabriskie, Diane Ladd, Harry Dean Stanton and co starring Julia Ormond and Jeremy Irons with cameos by Mary Steenburgen, Terry Crews, William H. Macy and more, Inland Empire is also known for its absurdist elements, like a recurring sitcom y sequence with human like rabbits replete with laugh track and all taken straight from the filmmakers web only video series, Rabbits but Lynchs picture is strangely coherent and one of his most chilling works. Inland Empire was shot without a script and took Lynch two and a half years to make. The filmmaker hasnt directed a feature since, but Inland is a masterful and frightening brainful that one can ruminate on and revisit over and over again. Celine and Julie 1. Here are 11 confusing movies that are sure to stupefy and bewilder the best of us. The most elliptically playful and joyfully absurd mindbender on this list, though itself not without its nightmarish qualities, Jacques Rivettes whimsical and strange Celine Julie is the pop goes the weasel meets Alice In Wonderland of brainbusters, albeit a long and winding one, with many contours and colors that runs for an exhausting three and a half hours. Centering on two female friends Dominique Labourier and Juliet Berto who find themselves in a loop they cannot free themselves from, Celine and Julie is equal parts buddy travelogue, mystery and creepy ghost tale, which culminates in a haunted mansion with the two Scooby Doo like detectives who try to help a dead girl discover who killed her. But its far less linear than it sounds, more of an opaque cycle of loosely connected themes that coalesce suddenly in the final act like a magic trick pulled off while in a state of hypnosis. Max, however, is convinced his teacher fell to a stroke because the exhausting probabilities broke him and in order to discover the deeper mysteries of the number, one has to dance past the edge of madness. Reality bends as it is wont to do in these movies and Max finds himself at the nexus of a conspiracy where all parties want the knowledge in his head thats driving him insane. Perhaps a collection of choreographed moments that exist outside of time, Resnais picture centers on a social gathering in an elegant chateau wherein one of the guests, a nameless man Giorgio Albertazzi meets a nameless woman Delphine Seyrig and insists they have met before and she has been waiting for him all along. But once a person becomes a citizen of Brigadoon they must forever remain within its narrow boundaries. Anyone who leaves will break the spell, and the village and its people will disappear forever. Brigadoon has several pretty songs and a couple of fun dance numbers. The staging is elaborate, but the show doesnt quite make it to the top tier of the MGM musical pantheon. The real stars are the studio artisans that mounted the immense scenic backdrops that MGM used as backgrounds for its Cinema. Scope movies. The film doesnt seem to be taking place on a theater stage, nor does it attempt to be realistic. What it looks like is a giant museum diorama, the kind with painted backgrounds behind stuffed animals. Color coordinated briars and heather are stuck around the ground like Easter decorations. Its not artificial fake, its artificial claustrophobic, even with the cyclorama backgrounds. The tone of the film is High Art, with the accompanying lofty emotions established and maintained through the balletic movements of Cyd Charisse and Gene Kelly, even when theyre not dancing. We dont think that every film of 1. Brando mode of realism, but Brigadoon comes off as a bit formalist. Most of Frederick Loewes songs aim for romantic sentiments of the kind that exalt True Romance as a nearly impossible ideal. Only Almost Like Being In Love and The Heather on the Hill are melodic standouts. Gene Kelly is called on to mostly sing, his weakest talent, while the dances are tasteful but not particularly memorable. Only the Go Home With Bonnie Jean dance develops a communal sense of fun. Otherwise the film has the feel of a pageant. The concept of Brigadoon, a magical destination for those tired of the chaos of modern life, is pure soft boiled hooey. Anybody looking for the roots of White Flight might find that the play touches the same retreat to the safe past sentiment. The wish to ignore the rest of the world and make ones perfect neighborhood last forever is a weakly disguised isolationist reactionary fantasy. It fits the complacent 1. Lost Horizons escapist colonial fantasy was a predictable response to the fears of 1. A Scot of 1. 75. 4 is supposed to have made a deal with God to initiate the miracle, yet the storybook pure Brigadoon isnt shown to have any Christian influence. Brigadoon has existed for only two days in this isolated state and already it has a dissident. The unhappy jilted suitor Harry Beaton played by ballet dancer Hugh Laing agonizes about being stuck in an enclosed world that holds no future for him. The rest of Brigadoon, even his own kin, appear to be in denial. Everybodys happy, so Harry must be the problem. Frankly, we understand Harrys anxiety. Jerry Lee Lewis could dedicate a song to what everybodys thinking about the hamlet of Brigadoon theres got to be a whole lotta in breedin going on. Alan Jay Lerner takes his fantasy seriously, and the theme that Love conquers Time was apparently the right message to make the show a Broadway hit in 1. Im afraid that I interpret Alan Jay Lerners fantasy as anything but whimsical. When Harry Beaton tries to escape, Brigadoon suddenly resembles Invasion of the Body Snatchers. A malcontent that cannot conform is dangerous and must be restrained. A convenient accident solves the problem. Brother Bear 2 Full Movie. Brigadoon is the kind of romantic fantasy thats supposed to be appreciated for its charms and not examined too closely, and on those terms it wont disappoint. Comic relief is provided via a funny sidekick, who models the cynicism the hero wishes to leave behind. Serving as a substitute Oscar Levant, Van Johnsons main purpose is to provide a bad example and deflate Genes romantic mood. Brigadoon is not about the afterlife, exactly, but it probably does qualify as a Film Blanc. As is typical of Entitlement Fantasies of the Convenient Kind, unalterable fantasy rules yield to true love, especially where above the title talent is concerned. Just as in Lost Horizon, the hero finds paradise, loses it and returns to search for it again. Kelly should have to wait 9. Brigadoon to re emerge from the mist, but the magical town leaps back to life just for him. Its kind of like God telling Adam and Eve, Come back to the garden, I was just kidding. My wicked self cannot resist examining the Brigadoon concept more closely. Wouldnt Kellys Tommy Albright contaminate the magic town with modern ideas and knowledge Wouldnt allowing Kelly into the community defeat the purpose for which Brigadoon was created in the first place When he sees that Brigadoons customs, superstitions, and scientific and medical state are mired in the Dark Ages, is modern man Kelly really going to keep silent about things like basic hygiene and nutrition Typical of the loose ends that are left dangling, Van Johnsons Jeff is abandoned at the edge of Brigadoon without comment, or even a close up to tell us his state of mind.
